Porcelain veneers have enhanced the appearance of millions of dental patients’ smiles. These versatile restorations can conceal stains, discoloration, chips, cracks, fractures, and minor alignment problems. Aside from being attractive, porcelain veneers are strong and durable, which makes them an ideal treatment option for patients who want to quickly and drastically improve the appearance of their smile.
However, while porcelain veneers are built to withstand wear and tear, they do have a limited lifespan. With proper care, veneers can last 15 to 20 years, at which point they will need to be replaced. Cosmetic dentist Toni Sartini is happy to offer porcelain veneers replacement to those of our Palmyra, IN patients whose veneers have become worn down or damaged in any way.
Do Porcelain Veneers Have to be Replaced?
When veneers become damaged or worn down, some patients question whether they have to be replaced. The short and simple answer is “yes.” Prior to performing porcelain veneers treatment, Dr. Sartini explains to patients that this is an irreversible treatment.
To make sure that the veneers fit well against the teeth and blend in with any untreated teeth, we must remove some tooth enamel during the initial treatment process. While the amount of enamel that is removed is minimal, it is enough to compromise tooth structure. Without veneers in place, the teeth will be weaker and vulnerable to decay, infection, and other dental complications.
Aside from the oral health concerns, the smile will appear unattractive and uneven without veneers in place. Since the primary goal of porcelain veneers is to enhance the aesthetics of the smile, it is highly unlikely that any patient would consider not replacing porcelain veneers, even if that were an option.
When Should Veneers Be Replaced?
Over time, veneers will gradually wear down. Porcelain veneers may begin to look more translucent, they may gradually become stained, or they may feel loose when a patient bites. As issues such as these develop, it is up to the patient and dentist to decide when is the best time to replace porcelain veneers.
In other situations, it is necessary to replace porcelain veneers right away. If any of the following problems arise, Dr. Sartini will schedule porcelain veneers replacement appointment as soon as possible:
- The veneers become chipped or cracked
- Veneers become loose or fall off a tooth
- Decay or infection develops on the natural teeth beneath the veneers
The porcelain veneers replacement procedure is pretty simple, and remarkably similar to the initial placement process. To begin with, the old porcelain veneers will be removed. Since the teeth have been previously prepared, they will not need to be altered in any way at this appointment. However, they will need to be cleaned and as much bonding material as possible from the initial veneers treatment will be removed.
Once the teeth are ready, the new porcelain veneers can be put in place. As with the first set of veneers, these will be designed to the unique specifications of the patient. After ensuring that the veneers fit properly and feel comfortable, they will be bonded to the teeth. This procedure can provide patients with another 15 to 20 years of a strong, beautiful smile.
