The appearance of the gum line is something many people don’t realize can be altered to improve overall aesthetics. What Is Laser Gum Reshaping?
Laser gum reshaping is a cosmetic dentistry treatment used to correct the gum line and improve the smile’s appearance. Traditionally, scalpels were used to cut away excess gum tissue, but advances in dentistry have led to the development of dental lasers as a tool for gum reshaping. Dental lasers allow gum reshaping to be performed faster, with less pain, and a quicker recovery time.

Laser gum reshaping treatment begins by numbing the gums with a local anesthetic. Once the gums are sufficiently numbed, a dental laser is used to gently remove excess, uneven gum tissue. Bleeding is typically minimal as the laser cauterizes the gum tissue as it cuts. Most patients find the procedure relatively painless. The gums may be mildly sore after treatment, but pain can generally be relieved with ibuprofen or other doctor approved pain reliever. Aspirin-based medications are not recommended as they can lead to bleeding issues.

Recovery may take anywhere from a few days to two weeks. During the recovery process, it is important to avoid hard, crunchy foods, and foods with small seeds, as these can irritate the healing gums. Some foods to avoid include corn ships, sesame seed buns, and popcorn.

Brushing and flossing must not be skipped during recovery, however, it’s important to use a gentle hand when dealing with healing gums. Switching to a soft bristled toothbrush and applying light pressure can prevent injury to the gums during the healing process. A warm saltwater rinse is also useful to gum recovery, as it is a gentle anesthetic that won’t burn like alcohol-based mouthwashes.

Am I a Candidate for Laser Gum Reshaping?
Laser gum reshaping is a great option for those who are unhappy with the appearance of their gums, whether due to an irregular gum line or excessive gum tissue. Candidates for laser gum reshaping need to be in good overall health and have healthy teeth and gums. Those who may benefit from laser gum reshaping may suffer from one or more of the following issues:

Excessive gum tissue: Excessive gum tissue can make the smile look overly “gummy.” Laser gum reshaping can remove excess gum tissue to make the smile look proportional.
Irregular gum line: Uneven gum lines can be improved with laser gum reshaping.
Teeth look small due to gums: Extra gum tissue can cover large portions of the teeth, making the teeth look too small. Laser gum reshaping can be used to remove gum tissue to reveal more of each tooth.
Periodontal procedures: Laser gum reshaping is useful for many periodontal procedures, like fitting dental crowns or reducing pockets caused by gum disease.
